Benefits of eating ice cream in the summer

On a hot day there’s simply nothing more refreshing than a tasty ice cream cone. Many of us like to enjoy ice cream all year round but it’s definitely during the warmer months of the year that it can become something of a craving. Luckily, if this is the season in which you most like to sample ice cream there are some very good reasons to give in and do it.

Ice cream contains good things

It’s not just the taste of ice cream that makes it a great food to consume in the summer but the nutrients it contains too. You’ll find everything, from vitamin D and riboflavin to vitamin A and calcium in the average scoop of ice cream, all of which contribute to a healthy body. Some flavours can offer even more of a boost when it comes to what they contain – for example, dark chocolate is renowned for being a good source of antioxidants and vanilla beans also contain potassium.

It could give you an energy boost

For some of us, the hotter months of the year are seriously draining and you may find yourself constantly feeling tired and lethargic. Eating ice cream could be responsible for delivering an instant energy boost. The sugar in ice cream contains glucose, which is one of the components that can fuel the human body through the day.

It might help to improve brainpower

One study carried out in Japan found that ice cream could actually help to make us more alert. The research compared the impact of eating ice cream for breakfast with having a glass of cold water instead. Those taking part in the study who had the ice cream were found to be much more alert. So, if you’re looking for a brainpower boost during a hot summer day, ice cream could provide it.

The calcium in ice cream is beneficial

In fact, it’s a key component for helping to building strong teeth and bones in humans. Bones and teeth are 99% calcium and ice cream contains plenty of this thanks to the milk and cream ingredients. So, as well as a taste sensation you could also be getting a calcium boost every time you’re eating ice cream too.

Soothing soreness

From mouth ulcers through to a sore throat, ice cream has traditionally been a great way to soothe soreness. If you have a summer cold, you’re losing your voice or you’re suffering from an epidemic of mouth ulcers then some ice cream could help temporarily ease the pain.

Contributing to a happier summer

There is evidence that ice cream produces serotonin when consumed by humans – this is the feel good hormone that helps to boost mood. Whether you’re having a moment of road rage, going through a break up or struggling with a heavy workload when you’d rather be on holiday, ice cream can make you feel better.

These are just some of the benefits of eating ice cream during the summer months.

The brainchild of owner Bruno Forte, whose family have been producing real Italian Gelato for well over a century, Swoon’s ethos focuses on using only the finest ingredients from around the world and combining them with a traditional process known for giving gelato its distinctive, smooth texture and delightful flavour.

Bruno starts by saying: “I had been considering setting up a gelato business for a number of years. With limited knowledge and experience myself, I took the decision to sign up for an intensive course which would at least allow me to understand the basics. Having researched different options, I decided to join the Carpigiani Gelato University in Bologna, Italy.” As the global leader in the manufacture of gelato and ice cream equipment, Carpigiani offers unrivalled expertise and decades of experience in the market. As Bruno says:

“My team and I worked closely with Carpigiani UK, who helped us design the layout and worked closely with us to specify the equipment we would need to handle the extensive range we wanted to offer and the peak demand we expected to generate.”
