From Waste to Wealth: How Sustainable Practices Can Boost Your Business's Bottom Line

Sustainability is gaining even more importance in business operations, and we’re finding operators are discovering more ways to build sustainable practices into their busineses all the time.  Whether environmentally or economically, the ability to sustain, reuse and recycle is making an impact. So here we have our latest tips and tricks to help you to save money and to save the planet!

Food Waste

This can be a huge money pit for many businesses, so try some of these ideas to reduce the amount of waste produced in the kitchen:

  • Try indoor composting. Allocate an indoor bin and remember to throw food scraps into it and then empty into an outdoor compost bin.

  • Try to avoid buying more perishables than you can finish. Watch purchases at big-box retailers where everything comes in bulk and can easily go bad before you have a chance to use it.
  • Write down your waste. Unconsciously throwing waste away is common, but by understanding what you are throwing away you can then make plans to repurpose.
  • Have a chat with your suppliers. Ask about working together to reduce food waste.
  • Label your food by date and keep older food near the front of the fridge.
  • Track the popularity of products/ flavours to understand demand, avoiding excess orders in future.
  • Seal food in air-tight storage bags, to keep out the moisture.

Utilities

You don’t need us to tell you that your utility bills are crazy right now! But it really is worth asking equipment suppliers how the machines you use every day could help you to save money.  Some have energy and/ or water saving features and we can sometimes use equipment day in and day out without realising we could actually be using it more efficiently!

Many companies offer staff training which can really help you to optimise the use of your equipment.

Water – Water saving products such as self-pasteurisation and timed shut-off taps, can help to save thousands of pounds per year.   Some Carpigiani products offer self-pasteurisation and this means they may only need to be cleaned every 42 days rather than every 3 or 4 days, delivering huge savings on water, cleaning supplies, and time.

Electricity - Carpigiani HE batch freezers feature ‘High-Efficiency’ technology which can save up to 30% in electricity and water consumption compared to the same volume of product produced with other batch freezers.

The hardest part of creating a sustainable business is implementing the initial changes, however once they have been made, and habits enforced, the road to a cleaner environment and bigger savings is clear.
